I am a palliative care volunteer with the Saanich Penninsula Hosital.
When maternity was centralized and removed from our hospital, quick thinking prevailed and caring resourceful people turned this loss into an opportunity. They brilliantly lobbied for the rebirth of the unit into a resource for palliative care.
While we now have our own comprehensive palliative training program supported by the Foundation, at that time the only one available was through Victoria Hospice.
The Saanich Peninsula Hospital Foundation stepped up to fund those of us who had an interest in this type of volunteering.
The Foundation continues to provide us with ongoing financial and educational support.
We are a fortunate community. Never does the Foundation stay with the status quo. If our hospital needs it, the Foundation is there to do what is necessary to make it happen. They lobby the powers that be, they fundraise, and usually it is a bunch of both.
