THE CRYSTAL CRUSADERS

An enthusiastic and appreciative group of Saanich Peninsula residents, headed up by Fraser Smith and the folks at The Smith Manouevre, are nominating the Saanich Peninsula Hospital Foundation for a 2010 Saanich Peninsula Chamber of Commerce Crystal Award. The Foundation is a wonderful organization that takes its mission of supporting OUR hospital truly to heart. The community owes much to its efforts to make life on the Saanich Peninsula better for us all, at all stages of life. Join us in our campaign to see the SPHF recognized in the category of

BUSINESS OF THE YEAR – NOT FOR PROFIT.

My Saanich Peninsula Hospital Story - #5

I am a palliative care volunteer with the Saanich Penninsula Hosital.

When maternity was centralized and removed from our hospital, quick thinking prevailed and caring resourceful people turned this loss into an opportunity. They brilliantly lobbied for the rebirth of the unit into a resource for palliative care.

While we now have our own comprehensive palliative training program supported by the Foundation, at that time the only one available was through Victoria Hospice.

The Saanich Peninsula Hospital Foundation stepped up to fund those of us who had an interest in this type of volunteering.

The Foundation continues to provide us with ongoing financial and educational support.

We are a fortunate community. Never does the Foundation stay with the status quo. If our hospital needs it, the Foundation is there to do what is necessary to make it happen. They lobby the powers that be, they fundraise, and usually it is a bunch of both.

My Saanich Peninsula Hospital Story - #4

The Saanich Peninsula Hospital has been a godsend to our family, 3 of our 4 children were born there. Our last child, at age 5 was diagnosed with juvenile diabetes, or type one diabetes mellitus. The diabetes itself was more manageable with the care of the Saanich Peninsula Hospital, staff and volunteers as over the years (14) we have arrived at their emergency room more than once.
There was one incident when my son went into a coma, at age 6, we rushed him to the hospital, only 2 miles from home, where he was able to be seen immediately, he was put on an IV drip. I can not imagine what the latent repercussions of delayed treatment may have been. We played with finger puppets hand knitted by the volunteers which made the time go by as fun, rather than upsetting. My son today is working on his associate science degree, wanting to join the medical profession in the future, one that happily, is healthy, in part due to the quality, availability and integrity of the Saanich Peninsula Hospital Foundation.

My Saanich Peninsula Hospital Story - #3

The Saanich Peninsula Hospital is near and dear to me. My 2 children, Doug and Lindsey Eastgate, who are now both over 25yrs old were born there. I have wonderful memories of the nurses and doctors that shared our happy memories as well as our sad ones with the illness of close family members as well.

SPH seems like a small hospital but it has a heart of gold. I live in Florida now and I am happy to promote SPH for the award.

Sincerely,
Judy (Eastgate) Crowson

My Saanich Peninsula Hospital Story - #2

I'm Penny Thorton-Trump and it's my hospital.

I'm Penny Thorton-Trump and it's my hospital.

I've always felt that the Saanich Peninsula Hospital is the heartbeat of the community. I know I'm a bit biased, since I have been receiving gamma globulin infusions every two weeks at the hospital for many years. But I've seen the hospital up close and personal and I feel fortunate to be able to have all these treatments close to home. It's a wonderful hospital where great things happen, thanks to the dedicated doctors, staff and volunteers.

It's also wonderful because of the Saanich Peninsula Hospital Foundation. The hard work of its Board and staff has resulted in success after success--from the new Emergency Room to a beautiful and homey Palliative Care Unit to the new Operating Rooms that will be built soon. The Crystal Award would be particularly appropriate this year, as the Saanich Peninsula Hospital Foundation celebrates its 25th Anniversary.

It's your hospital too. I want to see the SPHF honoured for its work by winning the Chamber of Commerce's Crystal Award for Business of the Year – Not for Profit.

My Saanich Peninsula Hospital Story - #1

My late husband, Charlie White, and I have long been strong advocates for Saanich Peninsula Hospital Foundation as a means to help support our local hospital. Through the tireless efforts of Foundation Members, many wonderful additions and enhancements to the hospital have been possible.

Recently we were guests at the Palliative Care Unit of the hospital. It is warm, friendly and very homelike while at the same time being a full care unit for very sick people. Our family and I were able to spend quality time with Charlie during the last few days before he passed away, and I was able to stay overnight in his quiet, comfortable room in the cleverly expandable chair that turns into a bed. The Palliative Care haven came about as a direct result of the Foundation's work. My family and I are so very grateful. Being able to spend your last days so near to home is a blessing.

CRUSADERS MEET TO LAUNCH CAMPAIGN

The first meeting to plot out a strategy to bolster the nomination of the Saanich Peninsula Hospital Foundation for a Saanich Peninsula Chamber of Commerce Crystal Award was held on Wednesday, February 3rd. Although a nomination for the award requires only ONE letter of support, the Crusaders are determined to showcase the value of this great organization by arriving with an avalanche of support from residents of the Peninsula.

We're hoping to achieve this through speaking out at service clubs and municipal meetings, providing support forms for people to sign at key places in the community and using the internet. We'll speak to residents whenever or wherever else we can find a crowd (large or small). We'll be getting out in the community looking for supporters of the SPHF willing to show how much they appreciate the Foundation's efforts over more than 20 years. This is one SPHF campaign that does NOT require any monetary contribution!

Stay tuned for information about where you can go to put your signature on the nomination form.
